I wanted to focus more on the virus rather than just my family reacting to it. I have been watching the trends closely and you can predict with near certainty that any time there is a holiday or event where people should be following social distancing guidelines, that there will be an increase in cases 5 to 14 days later.
The post Memorial Day spike was no surprise. June 1st showed a record amount of infections which was likely a correction to the previous tallies. But either way, there was an increase in cases. Death rates went up as well. However the MA administration is saying that overall the rate is decreasing because the number of tests has increased showing a lower overall infection rate. It's hard to believe anyone right now when we've seen so many states open by creatively hiding the death and infection rates. All this to "protect" the economy...while knowingly killing citizens in the process. Until there is a comprehensive Federal (laughable) testing a tracing program, safety will be limited.
Massachusetts is still going ahead with a stage 2 opening that will open more businesses. Some of it is definitely because of political pressure. The governor Charlie Baker has done better than most at protecting the state. He had to do some back room deals to get PPE to the hospitals and to prevent the Federal government from seizing it and selling it to the highest bidder.
Speaking of states, for the first time in coming up to Maine we experienced massive culture shock! Massachusetts has mandatory mask wearing in public and no going out except for critical workers. Going out in Mass, almost everyone has a mask handy. All store employees are required to wear them. NO business can open unless it implements social distancing guidelines.
Maine on the other hand thinks that the pandemic is something that happens to other people. Very few people wear masks or practice social distancing. Predictably, their infection rate is climbing. I expect it to keep doing so with all the out of staters coming in and following suit by not social distancing by their example.
We make sure that we only go out here with full protective gear when we absolutely have to. To help insure this, we bring up as many groceries and sundry items with us as we can fit. Luckily most of our neighbors are also from Mass and all seem to be following strict social distance guidelines.
So we opened up our camp like normal. The only difference? We have guest rooms that will not be used by anyone in the near future. My daughter and her boyfriend will be allowed to use the camp as it helps everyone get some distance. They are also not very good at practicing social distancing so it's actually safer for us.
